FLAGSHIP INITIATIVE

A Rural-Based Living Laboratory

Kumudzi Centre “University Living Lab” is a rural-based education, research and innovation platform developed from the foundations of the Kumudzi Eco-Learning Centre. Over the past two decades, Kumudzi has evolved as a space for hospitality, eco-learning, community engagement and rural enterprise, and is now being repositioned into a university-linked living laboratory.

The Centre connects academic institutions, researchers, students, development partners, private sector actors and local communities in generating practical solutions to development challenges — providing a real-world environment where ideas, technologies, policies and development models can be co-created, tested, refined and scaled in partnership with communities.

Its areas of focus include rural transformation, sustainable agriculture, food systems, environmental conservation, climate resilience, tourism, entrepreneurship, youth employment, SME development, education and community-based innovation.

Through Kumudzi Centre “University Living Lab”, rural areas are demonstrated as centres of high-tech innovation and sustainable development, ensuring that academic research translates into tangible improvements for local populations.

FOUNDER

Professor David D. Mkwambisi

Sustainability Scientist & Institutional Development Specialist

Professor Mkwambisi founded Kumudzi Centre out of a conviction that universities must go beyond conventional teaching and research to become active drivers of inclusive development, entrepreneurship, innovation and societal transformation. Having grown up in rural Malawi before advancing into national, regional and global academic and development spaces, he understands both the challenges facing rural communities and the opportunities that emerge when education, innovation and partnership are properly aligned.

His vision for the Centre is closely aligned with the UN Agenda 2030, the African Union Agenda 2063 and Malawi 2063 — positioning Kumudzi Centre as a model for university–community collaboration, rural innovation and sustainability science in Africa.

Drive Change Through Collaboration

Whether for institutional partnerships, research collaborations, or speaking engagements, we welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can accelerate rural transformation together.
